Can we expect 140 new metro stations in Dubai?

Can we expect 140 new metro stations in Dubai?

Moving around Dubai has never been easier, from the city hosting the world’s finest roads to the cleanest and fastest-running public transportation system and one of the world’s largest water travel networks!

So, when the city plans to expand, it's only a given that the public transportation system also expands in the right direction.

RTA (Roads Transport Authority) is set to significantly expand its metro network with plans to build more than double the number of metro stations by 2040. This major infrastructure development will transform the city's public transportation landscape, enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors alike.

Looking into - Dubai’s current metro network

As of now, the Dubai Metro is operating across 64 stations which span an 84 square kilometre area across two lines. The Green Line, which serves Bur Dubai and Deira in the old town, and the Red Line, which connects the old city and airport to Downtown, Dubai Marina, and Expo 2020 in the southwest.

So, how does the expansion come about?

As Dubai’s property market continues to boom, many popular developers have shifted their base to Dubai, announcing some of the world’s finest properties. Following the success of the market, came a wave of expats moving to the city, and of course, this surge created a need for public transportation systems to expand across the city.

In an announcement made on social media by the Government of Dubai, we got the news that by 2040, the metro network will span over 140 stations, covering over 228 square kilometres. This expansion plan aims to boost the metro's reach and capacity, offering easy transportation solutions across the city.

By 2030, the metro will see an increase to 96 stations over 140 square kilometres. This intermediate expansion phase will start this year onwards to set the stage for the larger 2040 vision, gradually enhancing the city’s public transportation coverage.

What can residents expect?

The expansion is part of the Executive Council of Dubai's strategy to develop properties and family-friendly areas surrounding metro stations and also reduce carbon emissions to 16 tonnes per capita. This is to generate more economic opportunities around the city and amongst residents.

The plan includes increasing the population density around metro stations and integrating more residential, commercial, office, and service spaces, making these areas vibrant urban hubs.

While specific locations for the new stations have not been disclosed, there are some details about upcoming developments such as; The Blue Line.

This line is currently under construction and will extend over 30 kilometres, with 15.5 kilometres underground and 14.5 kilometres above ground. This line will feature 14 stations, including three interchange stations which will integrate seamlessly with the existing Red and Green Lines.

Furthermore, with the upcoming expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport, which aims to become the world's largest capacity airport, a new Dubai Metro station in the area will significantly enhance connectivity for travellers and residents.

Apart from the Blue Line, there have been discussions about additional lines that could further expand the metro network. These include:

- Purple Line: Proposed to run from the north to the south of the emirate, with Al Maktoum International Airport as the key stop.

- Gold Line and Pink Line: These lines are believed to cover routes from the west to the east of Dubai, although specific details have not been shared.

This development is set to support Dubai's growth in the property market, reduce carbon emissions and create a vibrant, economically prosperous community around the metro stations.
