Christmas Traditions at Allsopp & Allsopp.

With Christmas only a few days away, we asked our amazing team to share their favourite traditions with us, which are celebrated in their home countries during the holiday season.

With over 10 nationalities at Allsopp & Allsopp, we learnt about England, the Philippines, India, Pakistan and Ireland.

England - Blazing Christmas Pudding

Although roast turkey is the main event of a traditional Christmas dinner for many Brits - it isn't the only dish traditionally served! On a Christmas dinner table in the UK, you can also expect to find a nut roast with roasted vegetables, sage stuffing and pigs in blankets, all finished off with Christmas pudding and custard! For those looking for something a little extra, the pudding is doused with brandy and set alight before serving!

The Philipines - Nine Masses

Have you heard of almsgiving and merriment - Filipino style? The Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo tradition was introduced to the Philippines in the 1500s. Churches across the nation hold nine Masses within a 36-hour period that concludes with a special celebration on Christmas Eve!

India - Biryani and Mulled Wine

In India, the celebration of Christmas begins with Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. Churches are decorated with poinsettia flowers and candles and afterwards, there is a huge feast (typically biryanis are served with mulled wine!) and presents are exchanged!

Pakistan - Fireworks!

On Christmas Eve, there are huge firework displays which signify the start of Bara Din (12 Days). You can expect lots of dancing and the exchanging of presents. Churches are packed for the midnight or vigil-mass services

Ireland - The Red Candle

In Irish culture, a tall red candle is placed by the largest window after sunset on Christmas Eve. The candle is left to burn all night and represents a welcoming light for Mary and Joseph. Children often light the red candle as a way for Santa to find them!

These traditions teach us the importance of Christmas in different countries and the beauty of cultural celebrations.
