Agent of the month – Carlos Cruz
Meet Carlos Cruz our Agent of the Month for April! Carlos has worked all hours of the day and gone above and beyond for his clients which has led to him smashing his targets through the roof! Learn what motivates him, what annoys him and what he can’t live without…

Carlos Agent Of the Month 1. What do you love most about the job?

I love to satisfy clients. I work with a lot of families and it is so satisfying to get them the dream home they have been looking for. A lot of the villas I sell are owner-occupied and I try my best to get the seller the best price. It can be a challenge, but the rewards are so worth it.

2. What about the job drives you crazy?

Owners who don’t understand the price of their property. I appreciate that some owners may be emotionally attached and have had attractive offers in the past, but the market has changed. I always give examples of properties in the area which have sold recently in the hope that sellers will understand where the market is.

3. What’s your ideal day off?

A very relaxed pool day is my favourite. Dubai is home to some of the world’s best beach clubs and you will see me there on most weekends. It’s nice to lay back and refresh your batteries so you can go again the next day at work with maximum effort.

4. What is your proudest moment in the job?

Recognition means a lot to me. Allsopp & Allsopp is a large company with quality agents. To get recognition as the company’s best agent for April is something I’m very proud of. It really helps with new clients as there is so much competition in the real estate market that it is essential to stand out.

5. What is the longest day you’ve ever worked and why?

I had a distress sale with an owner-occupied villa. The buyer was an investor buyer and on a business trip overseas. I called the buyer to tell him that his offer had been accepted but because of the time difference and because he had just stepped off a flight, he wasn’t able to sign and send the documents over until 11 pm. It was one of my first sales deals and the team had gone home. I was in the office by myself thoroughly checking through the documents whilst getting guidance from our Managing Director of the UAE, Marc. I ended up leaving the office at 2.30am but with the satisfaction of getting the deal done.

6. What’s the furthest you’ve travelled to meet a client.

This was another late night – these are more often than not in this job! It was 8 pm and me and Marc Bellamy – a teammate headed off to Abu Dhabi to get a contract signed. We got back to Dubai after midnight. This is my biggest deal to date, so it was well worth it. As a good broker you make yourself available for clients - travelling and late nights come as part and parcel of the job.

7. What is the strangest client request you’ve had?

I was dealing with a client from Sharjah who came from a very wealthy family and they wanted to buy a home in Al Barari. He asked me if it was okay for his two tigers to live in the back garden - I think he said their names where Simba and Mufasa and showed me the photos of his 2 pets!!

8. What have you had to sacrifice for the job?

Time with family. Everyone has to make a sacrifice to reach their goals and unfortunately, I live further away from my family than I’d like to, but I make sure that when I do see them, we spend quality time together. Real estate is a job where you can decide the quality of life you lead, and I hope that one day soon, my family can spend more time in Dubai with me in my own home.

9. Tell us something that no one knows about you

I was a Gliding Instructor in a Royal Air Force base back in the UK- not a lot of people are aware of this. It doesn’t often come up in conversation, to be honest. I have such a huge passion for flying and I flew for 5 years in the UK.

10. If your friends were to describe you in 3 words what would they be?

Stubborn, Outgoing, and Impulsive.

11. Best life achievement to date so far?

The Air Cadets awarded me with a flying excellence medal and scholarship. The ceremony was in London at Windsor Castle. To be in the Queen’s home getting an award was probably my coolest achievement to date.

12. What’s your pet peeve?

When people don’t inform that they are running late. Or people not indicating before they cut in front of your lane on a busy road like its normal to try and kill you!

13. If you had to pick a new name for yourself who would you be?

I already like my name but if I had to pick one it would be Maximus Decimus Meridius from the film ‘Gladiator’.

14. What’s your karaoke song?

I hate karaoke!! But, sometimes on a Friday night, you’ll find me blasting out a bit of Ricky Martin – Living La Vida Loca

15. What did you want to be growing up?

Pilot or an Astronaut.

16. Who would play you in the movie of your life?

Al Pacino – if I had the life of a gangster.

17. If you could read only one mind whose would you read?

My partners mind!! 100%

18. What’s the worst present you’ve ever received?

I wanted a guitar for a Christmas present as a kid. I wasn’t specific enough - they bought me a plastic blue toy one with buttons and no strings! I was heartbroken, and I still can’t get over it now.

19. Stranded on a desert island – what one thing would you take?

Starbucks coffee! I cannot live without it.

20. Which one of your friends are you most proud of and why?

One of my friends that I went to flight school with has stuck with it and is now flying Typhoons at the minute and I am very proud of what he has achieved. He’s definitely a friend I look up to and admire.
