Buckle up, folks! Dubai is about to take transportation to new heights with the launch of aerial taxis set to hit the skies as early as 2026. Yep, you read that right – flying taxis are no longer just a sci-fi dream but a soon-to-be reality right here in Dubai.
Last year, it was announced that Dubai will see air taxis coming soon - now we’ve gotten the official take off dates. So, from the upcoming Etihad Rail, all the way down to the electric abras and driverless taxis - something new is definitely taking the cake on the daily in Dubai, but aerial taxis - see now that really tops it all!
After the announcement made by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, back on February 11, 2023, Joby Aviation is taking the wheel for this project, along with Sky Sports Infrastructure, the wizards behind vertiport infrastructure.
Well, Dubai's gearing up to roll out vertiports – think of them as mini-airports for aerial taxis – at four primo spots: near Dubai International Airport, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and the ever-glamorous Palm Jumeirah.
These spots will be with take-off and landing zones, passenger perks, security checks, and even charging stations for electric rides like scooters and bikes. What’s even better? You can expect some nice restaurants, retail hubs and amenities to keep busy as you wait for your taxi - Dubai style.
These aerial taxis are built with room for four passengers plus the pilot - they are made extremely comfortable for travellers and can cover 161 km in one trip, zipping through the air at speeds of up to 321 km per hour. Translation? Say goodbye to hour-long commutes – a trip from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah will be a breezy 10 minutes.
Thinking about how these are going to affect the environment?
Fear not, as these flying wonders are designed to be as economical and sustainable as can be, with noise levels lower than helicopters and zero emissions to boot. That's right – they'll whisper quietly and leave nothing but clear skies behind them.
With safety, sustainability, and serious speed on the agenda, the aerial taxi project is set to revolutionise how travellers can get around the city.
