Dubai unveiled: How can you renew your UAE driving licence?

Licence just expired?

Did you know you could easily renew your licence through the RTA application?

Thanks to smart government initiatives that streamline the process, renewing your licence is cake now. In fact, it can take as little as 10 minutes to complete, with most of the steps being accessible online. The only exception is the eye test, which you can easily arrange at a registered optician's shop. In this step-by-step guide, we'll walk you through the process, ensuring you're back on the road hassle-free.

Step 1: Get an eye test!

Before renewing your licence, you'll need a valid eye test. Head to any optical shop registered with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for this. Remember to bring:

  • Your original UAE driving licence.
  • Your original Emirates ID.

If you don't have the original documents, check if the shop accepts digital versions. You can add a digital driving licence to your Apple Wallet and access the digital version of your Emirates ID. The cost typically ranges from AED 140 to AED 180, depending on the service provider.

Once you've completed the eye test and paid the fee, the optical specialist will update your test results in the RTA system. You'll receive an SMS on your registered mobile number, confirming that the eye test is uploaded, and you can proceed to renew your licence.

Step 2: Clear all your outstanding fines

Ensure all your traffic fines are settled before proceeding with the renewal. You can pay your traffic fines online through the RTA or Dubai Police application, making it a straightforward process.

Step 3: Apply for renewal

You have multiple options for renewing your licence in Dubai:

1. RTA website (rta.ae)

  • Visit the RTA website and click on 'Driver and Car Owner' in the top menu.
  • Under the License tab, select 'Apply for renewing a driving licence.'
  • Enter your details, including Emirates ID, driving licence, number plate, traffic code, and RTA account.
  • If you don't have an RTA account, follow the steps to create one. - Download the RTA Dubai app, tap 'Login/Register,' and use UAE Pass for login.
  • Verify your details and create a username and password.
  • Enter the OTP sent to your mobile number via SMS.
  • Select your preferred delivery method (kiosk, collection, courier, or eDocument) and pay the fees.

2. RTA's application ('RTA Dubai')

If you prefer the app, ensure your digital accounts (UAE Pass and RTA account) are set up. The renewal process is quick, and you'll receive the new digital licence on your phone instantly, with the option to get the physical copy delivered or collect it from a kiosk.

3. RTA centre or kiosk

Visiting an RTA customer service centre or kiosk is another easy way to renew your licence and receive the physical copy on the spot.

Step 4: Receive/collect your new licence

If you choose digital options, you'll receive the digital licence immediately. For a physical copy, you have these options:

  • Get it couriered (additional service charges apply).
  • Collect it from a customer service centre.
  • Print it through a smart kiosk.
  • Opt for the method that suits you best, and you'll be back on the road with your renewed driving licence in no time. Dubai's smart initiatives have truly made the renewal process hassle-free and efficient.
