But while you come back down, and get set into your new life around Dubai, you might be wondering why people around Dubai frequently do things the way they do.
So, let us break down a newbie’s guide to living in Dubai, and answer all those questions, you might or might not have had!
We’ve also got a selection of guides on our site to guide you through the process of moving to Dubai, covering everything from DEWA to du, so feel free to browse away. In the meantime, here are ten quick things you need to know about Dubai:
1. Kindness, all throughout!
In Dubai, people are always friendly, kind and respected. You'll experience a level of service you might not be accustomed to from back home.
For instance, back home at supermarkets you might pick up your groceries and pack them up yourself but in Dubai, there are staff members paid to pack your groceries for you. While it might feel unusual to have someone else do the packing, it's essential to appreciate and accept this complimentary service with a smile and a thank you.
2. Essential phrases you’ve got to know!
While English is widely spoken in Dubai, the native language is Arabic and you'll often hear some common Arabic phrases, even from non-Arabic speakers. For instance, "yallah" means "hurry up," "habibi" is a term of endearment meaning "darling," and "wallah" is an expression of sincerity, similar to "swear to God." Another popular one you’ll hear is “inshallah” which means “god willing” and if someone says “mashallah” take it as a compliment as it usually means “beautiful or very good”.
3. Modest dressing
Dubai has a fairly relaxed approach to dress codes compared to some other countries in the GCC. So, don’t believe anything you see on TikTok.
You can comfortably wear short skirts, crop tops, and, in many venues, women are encouraged to wear heels for nights out. However, please be aware that this more lenient dress code is specific to Dubai. When exploring neighbouring Emirates (cities) such as Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, a certain degree of modesty is expected.
Also ensure if you are going to cultural, or religious sites such as Mosques, Temples or Churches, you’ll have to be fully covered.
4. Carry passport photographs with you all the time!
Dubai needs passport photos for almost everything – from your company registration to setting up your rent and bank account. If you don't already have some on hand, you'll find photo booths in most malls where you can print off a collection.
Or just stock up on them in your wallet or bag!
5. Work-life balance is a must!
Dubai's work culture often involves working 40 to 50 hours a week, with a scarcity of traditional 9 am to 5 pm work hours.
Most jobs respect the culture of work-life balance but it's important to note that overtime is commonly expected in most roles, even for teachers who start their day early, at 7 am, and can sometimes finish at 4 pm.
Fortunately, for most of us Dubai boasts a thriving restaurant, bar, and club scene, offering the perfect way to unwind after a long day. The work/play culture may initially seem intense, but you'll adapt to it quickly.
6. The second hand market is consistently thriving!
We know Dubai is the hub of all things ultra-luxury from homes to bags. Dubai's transient nature, with people frequently purchasing luxury goods, has led to a flourishing second-hand goods market.
You'll often find pre-loved designer clothes at a fraction of the cost, nearly new furniture, and appliances available at fantastic prices online. Dubizzle, Facebook Marketplace, and the city's thrift shops are treasure troves if you're looking to furnish your new apartment on a budget.

7. Affordability is possible!
While Dubai has a reputation for being expensive, it's entirely possible to lead an affordable life here. Trust us, relatively Dubai is quite affordable if you are shopping, wining and dining at the right places!
Ladies' nights, budget-friendly supermarkets, special offers, discount apps, and economical residential areas make it easy to manage your expenses while still enjoying all that Dubai has to offer.
8. Essential apps you need on your phone!
In Dubai, everything is conveniently accessible.
You can have almost anything delivered to your doorstep, order a taxi from anywhere, book home cleaning services for as little as AED 35 per hour, and pay your bills online. Most of these services provide dedicated apps to cater to your every need, simplifying life in Dubai.

9. Don’t drink your tap water!
While Dubai's tap water won't make you sick, it's a common practice to drink filtered water in Dubai as it is easily accessible and can be delivered too!
You can set up weekly water deliveries with companies like Mai Dubai and Al Ain Water, who provide large reusable plastic bottles of water to your door, payable with coupons. Alternatively, you can have a filter installed on your tap for a relatively modest fee.
10. Keep winter clothes at hand always!
Dubai offers year-round sunshine, but don't be fooled.
In December, January and February, temperatures can drop to as low as 10 degrees Celsius in the evenings, even colder if you're out in the desert. Long-time Dubai residents are often seen wearing hats, scarves, coats, jumpers, and boots during the winter months. You might think it's a bit much, but once you acclimate to the warmer climate, you'll appreciate the extra layers when winter arrives.
