RTA’s AED 350 million NOL card upgrades: Everything you need to know

RTA for a quick minute now has been actively working around the clock to reshape the roads and transport systems across Dubai - and the results are already underway with traffic time in some areas nearly down by 50% while new metro lines are being built to enhance the city’s transport system - there’s a lot to keep up to date with!

This time around, RTA is making changes worth AED 350 million to upgrade its NOL card systems to make it all seamless and hassle-free for travellers, because a bustling city like Dubai doesn't slow down, we need it all on the go!

Let us bring you up to speed on what you can expect…

A top up of AED 350 million!

RTA is investing AED 350 million to revolutionise the way we top up and use our NOL cards. Gone are the days of fumbling for change, stressing about coins or worrying about the security of online payments. This updated Nol card system is set to have features like facial recognition and other bio-data scanners, to enhance security and streamline transactions through smart gates.

But the benefits don't stop there.

As Dubai moves towards a cashless society, the revamped NOL card system will play a pivotal role in this transition. Whether you're hopping on the metro, tram, bus, or even a taxi, the NOL card will remain your go-to payment method for all things transportation-related. Yes, you can still use your own cash or credit cards, but this would be a staple amongst residents for seamless transactions.

What can you expect from these upgrades?

For starters, trip planning, booking, and pre-payment will now be seamlessly done from smart channels, making travel more convenient than ever before. Additionally, you will have easy access to essential account details, such as your current balances, travel history, and fare calculations, ensuring there’s no more surprises when it's time to pay up.

Next up: Enhanced security features. With robust protections for user data and individual customer linking, the new NOL card system will implement centralised transport fare wallet technology, for enhanced safety and to avoid theft.

Since its opening and addition in 2009, the NOL card has become a staple for millions of commuters in Dubai. With over 30 million cards issued to date and a staggering 2.5 million payment transactions recorded last year alone, these upgrades are going to change up the game!

As part of the RTA's broader digital strategy for 2023-2030, these upgrades mark a significant milestone in Dubai's journey towards a smarter and more connected future.
