From congestion to convenience: Sheikh Hamdan announces AED 16 billion road plan

If you’ve spent time driving around in Dubai, you’ll be familiar with the city’s bustling traffic.
Good news - Sheikh Hamdan, Crown Prince of Dubai, recently announced the Main Roads Development Plan, worth AED 16 billion will revamp some of Dubai’s busiest roads to overall ease traffic across the city.
All about the Main Roads Development Plan
This ambitious project is part of a wider project worth AED 272 billion. With 46% of this budget dedicated to infrastructure, Dubai is investing heavily to create smoother, more efficient commutes for over 6 million residents.
Which roads will be upgraded?
The development plan targets key routes across the city, including major highways. Among the headline projects is Latifa bint Hamdan Street, which will be transformed into a 12,200-meter thoroughfare. Expected to handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions and serve over a million people.
Meydan Road and Al Mustaqbal Street will also see major upgrades. The capacity of Meydan Road will expand to accommodate 22,000 vehicles per hour, while Al Mustaqbal Street will increase its capacity from 9,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour, reducing travel times from eight minutes to just three and a half.
Meanwhile, the Trade Centre Roundabout will undergo extensive restructuring, including the addition of five new bridges totalling 5,000 meters to allow smoother traffic flow.
Projects for Al Fay Street and Al Safa Street are also underway. Al Fay Street will connect major routes like Al Khail Road, Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, and Emirates Road, creating a more seamless flow for drivers. The Al Safa Street upgrade will reduce travel time from 20 minutes to just two minutes for 358,000 residents in the area, connecting Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Wasl Road.
What changes will we see?
The road improvements come alongside other initiatives aimed at making travel in Dubai smoother and more convenient.
Such as the introduction of dedicated bus and taxi lanes that will span 20 kilometres. These lanes are expected to increase public transport ridership and cut down bus travel times.
As these projects unfold over the next three years, Dubai residents and visitors can look forward to less time on the road and more streamlined travel across the city!
