Lewis was the first to gamble on Dubai. He arrived with no financial cushion, no powerful network, and no guaranteed path to success. What he did have, however, was determination and the belief that Dubai’s future could be built by those willing to take risks.
Two years later, Carl watched Lewis’s earnings skyrocket to the point where Lewis was making in one week what Carl struggled to earn in an entire year in the UK. It wasn’t just impressive, it was life-changing, and impossible for Carl to ignore.

The Coffee Shop Years: Where Every Dirham Mattered
Those early days were anything but glamorous. Their “office” was whatever coffee shop had reliable Wi-Fi, and their meeting room was a small table squeezed between tourists and businesspeople. Every coffee purchased had to be justified because money was painfully tight.
Lewis came dangerously close to selling his car just to make payroll. Carl was juggling a loan back in the UK that felt like it followed him to Dubai.
Every decision they made mattered deeply and a small mistake didn’t just hurt profits; it threatened to end their business dream entirely. Yet even under that pressure, they worked day and night with the belief that their persistence would eventually pay off.
The First Office: A Make-or-Break Gamble
Eventually, they took the leap and signed a lease on a 5,000 sq. ft office on Al Wasl Road. It was huge for a company that only had three people, and at AED 700,000 a year, it was a financial stretch most people would never dare to make.
The entire venture was self-funded. No investors. No loans. No fallback plan.
The space itself was far from polished. The boardroom didn’t even have doors for two months because they simply couldn’t justify spending the money; every dirham needed to go towards surviving, literally. There were honest moments when the business was hanging on by a thread. Lewis went from a stable life to having almost nothing, and Carl threw everything he had into keeping the business alive.
It was an enormous gamble, but it became the foundation for everything that followed.
Then Came the 2008 Crash
Just when they were starting to find their rhythm, the global financial crisis hit. Real estate collapsed around the world, and Dubai was no exception. Deals dried up, companies vanished, and the market was flooded with fear.
For Carl and Lewis, this was a defining moment, either adapt to survive or disappear like so many others.
Instead of giving in, they doubled their effort. They stayed in Dubai when many others left. They kept calling clients when others shut their doors. They believed Dubai would come out the other side and they positioned themselves to rise with it.
Finding Their Flow and Building a Partnership
Working together as brothers came with its own set of challenges. Lewis had the on-ground Dubai experience, while Carl brought his own strengths and perspective. It took nearly five years to understand their natural roles. Carl became the operational backbone, responsible for structure, systems, and execution, while Lewis became the front-facing revenue driver, pushing growth, relationships, and strategy.
Titles meant nothing back then. Lewis might have been “Chairman” on paper, but he was also sweeping floors, fixing air-conditioning units, and solving whatever problem threatened the business that day. Everything was hands-on because everything was at stake.
Growing the Team and the Culture
As the company grew, one thing remained at the heart of its success: loyalty. Many of their senior leaders have been with them for over a decade, helping shape the culture that defines Allsopp & Allsopp today. Through market cycles, global disruptions, and the digital revolution, the company continued to evolve and so did their leadership.
This growth naturally expanded into the creation of the Allsopp & Allsopp Private Office, a dedicated division for handling Dubai’s most prestigious homes and elite clientele. It was a far cry from their early days in coffee shops, and a testament to how far the company had come.
Today: A Billion-Dollar Business With Over 600 People
Fast-forward to the present, and Carl and Lewis lead a billion-dollar real estate group with over 600 employees. Their challenges today revolve around scale, innovation, and maintaining a world-class culture, not wondering if they can pay their next salary bill.
One of their biggest debates recently had nothing to do with survival at all, but about how their office should feel. Lewis envisioned a space with a DJ booth, a barber, and a welcoming, lifestyle environment. Carl, ever the operational realist, preferred rows of desks and a more traditional setup.
The final result was a compromise, a blend of creativity and structure, much like the partnership that built the company itself.
