As we close off the first half of 2024, Dubai’s property market has shown impressive growth across all residential sectors with no signs of slowing down.
You did it!
Congratulations on your new home. Moving is always the start of a new adventure but we know how much time, work and effort it takes to get to this point.
What’s more, is that you’ve probably still got a few things on your checklist that you need to organise before you can sit back and enjoy your new space.
One super important one is DEWA - Dubai’s Electricity and Water Authority.
You know how it goes by now, let us break it down:

So, what is DEWA and do I need it?
DEWA is Dubai's official utility company for electricity and water supply.
All residents residing in the UAE have to register for DEWA, either moving into a new home for the first time or shifting homes.
How can I set it up?
There are two ways you can register for DEWA. This is either online or in person at any of their branches or what they like to refer to as ‘happiness centres’. Sounds nice right?
If you choose to register online, you’ll first need to create a profile on DEWA’s official website which can be done by clicking here.
Now it’s time to register for DEWA, follow these simple steps below:
You’ll now be on the official DEWA website, so navigate to the section ‘Activation of Electricity and Water (Move-in)’ which can be found on the main home-page.
Depending on your customer type, you now need to select the option that applies to you from the ‘Customer Type’ dropdown menu. These options include: expatriate, GCC national, investor, or UAE national.
Choose the ‘Account Type’ that applies to you - either owner or tenant.
If you're a tenant, remember to include the Ejari number for the premises. Note that some commercial free zones in Dubai are exempt from Ejari. In this case, simply select "I don't have Ejari."
If you live in a free zone, you’ll need to provide information such as, tenancy contract number, contract start date, contract end date, contract value, no. of rooms, and premise numbers. Don't forget to include the DEWA premise number. After providing all the required information, click "continue" and follow the steps to complete the process!
In case you missed it: Is your home as safe as you think it is?
You’re nearly there: the final step…
The last step to registering with DEWA is to settle the account activation fees.
These fees include a security deposit of AED 2,000 for residential apartments and AED 4,000 for residential villas. As well as activation charges of AED 100 for small metres and AED 300 for large metres to connect your electricity and water services.
There is also an additional AED30 for the Government registration, knowledge and innovation fee.
Discount alert! If you’re a Thukher and Sanad cardholder, you can avail a 50% discount on activation charges.
Once registration is complete, you’ll need to allow up to 15 hours for activation to take place.
And voila! Just like that, you’re set up.
