Umm Suqeim Street is set to undergo a major transformation!

Last year, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority broke all records by working full steam ahead on enhancing the city’s transportation systems. Be it building new roads to ease traffic, or introducing a brand new line on the metro system, digitising the whole water transportation system - no stone was left unturned.

And it comes as no surprise that 2024 will also be the year for new records to be set by RTA.

So, what’s new this year, you might ask? Well, RTA is embarking on a significant AED 332 million project to revamp Umm Suqeim Street, aligning with the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and comes in line with Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan.

All the details - you need to know:

This comprehensive project will be spanning across 4.6 kilometres from the intersection with Al Khail Road to the junction with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and is designed to upgrade the road network infrastructure, managing the city's ongoing expansion of roads and ensuring a seamless traffic flow.

Key upgrades to look out for:

800-metre-long tunnel: The major highlight of this project is the construction of an 800-metre-long tunnel on Umm Suqeim Street, near Kings School. This tunnel will feature four lanes in each direction, contributing significantly to traffic efficiency, and can ease traffic by nearly two hours compared to how it is currently.

Signalised surface intersection: As part of the overall plan, a signalised surface intersection will be incorporated, further optimising the traffic flow in the area.

The Umm Suqeim Street project will be built upon previously completed initiatives in the area.

One to note: In 2013, the RTA widened Umm Suqeim Street from the intersection of Sheikh Zayed Road to the intersection of Al Khail Road, incorporating two bridges and three pedestrian bridges to enhance accessibility.

In 2020, the RTA opened a central 500-metre bridge as part of the Bridges and Roads segment which would lead to the Dubai Hills Mall Project, further reducing the traffic infrastructure in the region.

And now, we might expect a metro station in Dubai Hills too, connecting people to that mall more easily.

What more can be expected?

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, the Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, shared his views on the project's strategic importance in enhancing connectivity between east-west and north-south streets.

“This project aims to improve the connectivity of four major traffic corridors in Dubai: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road,” said Al Tayer. He added, "It will enhance the capacity of the streets to accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, ensure a smoother flow of traffic, and significantly reduce the travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road from 9.7 to 3.8 minutes. This project will serve various residential and development areas, including Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, and Dubai Hills. These areas have an estimated population of about two million people.”

The Umm Suqeim Street transformation is a vital step in Dubai's commitment to efficient and accessible urban mobility.
