RTA Revolution: Nine innovative changes to ease traffic and congestion around Dubai.

Dubai residents have yet another reason or another nine reasons to rejoice as the Dubai Road and Transport Authority (RTA) continues to roll out major road enhancements across the emirate.

In line with making Dubai an even more convenient and accessible city to live in, RTA has announced nine innovative changes around town to ease traffic and congestion. Here's a look at some recent and upcoming upgrades that promise to transform the way we navigate the bustling metropolis.

Al Khaleej street upgrades

Al Khaleej Street is in for a significant makeover. And who doesn’t love Dubai-style makeovers!

The RTA's plans aim to increase the street’s capacity to accommodate over 12,000 vehicles per hour. The project spans 3 kilometres from the Infinity Bridge ramp down to Cairo Street and includes the construction of three new underpasses, stretching over 1.65 kilometres.

Al Qusais industrial area project

Dubai's Al Qusais Industrial Areas 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are in for a traffic revolution.

The RTA has unveiled plans for 32 new roads, which will be set to slash journey times by a remarkable 60%! These new roads will accommodate 1,500 vehicles per hour in both directions, significantly improving accessibility in the area. Stretching over 10 kilometres with approximately 43 kilometres of streetlights, these new roads are set to provide welcome relief for residents and workers in the Al Qusais Industrial Areas.

Al Seba Street - A game changer for Dubai Marina

Dubai Marina's notorious traffic congestion is finally getting a solution.

Recent improvements have been made to Al Seba Street, which have reduced travel time in the area by a remarkable 20 minutes during rush hours. Now, we are in for additional enhancements which include the construction of an extra exit toward Garn Al Sabkha Street intersection, allowing a capacity of 1,500 vehicles per hour.

With this upgrade, the total capacity for exiting Marina via Al Seba Street has soared to 2,400 vehicles per hour—a remarkable 266% increase. Dubai Marina residents can now rest assured that they won’t have to bang their heads against the steering wheel for countless hours.

Al Shindagha Project - A vision for the future

Dubai's ambitious Al Shindagha Project is set to switch up travel within the city. Since the early years of 2012, this project has been undergoing all sorts of construction to ease traffic, with the Infinity Bridge and more.

By 2030, the Shindagha project aims to reduce travel time from 104 minutes to just 16 minutes on the route to Sharjah. To achieve this, the project will see the construction of two new bridges and a tunnel, all of which have opened in recent months, this should successfully alleviate traffic congestion.

Phase 4 of the Al-Shindagha Corridor covers the construction of 15 intersections spanning 13 kilometres, benefitting Deira, Bur Dubai, and several key development projects. With a single-lane bridge, a two-lane tunnel, and a surface signalised intersection, Dubai is stepping into a future of seamless transportation.

Dubai Hills Estate metro station

Dubai Hills Estate, one of the city's fastest-growing neighbourhoods, is poised to become even more accessible.

Plans are already underway for a metro station to be located at Dubai Hills Mall. This development is set to seamlessly integrate the mall with adjacent neighbourhoods, including future metro stations and adjoining hotels. Dubai Hills Estate residents can look forward to enhanced connectivity, making daily commuting a breeze.

Garn Al Sabka bridges - Enhancing connectivity

Garn Al Sabkha Street and the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road intersection are undergoing a transformation with the construction of four bridges spanning 3,000 metres. Praise the Lord!

These four bridges will accommodate an impressive 17,600 vehicles per hour, significantly improving traffic flow between key roads. This project is part of a broader initiative to enhance Garn Al Sabkha Street, connecting Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads. The result will be reduced transit times and improved traffic conditions.

Hessa Street redevelopment - A groundbreaking turning point

In early 2023, Dubai's Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) announced that they will commence the redevelopment of Hessa Street.

The project includes upgrades to entrances and exits, improvements to upper bridges, and an overall increase in road capacity. The redevelopment will benefit residents in Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC) and Jumeirah Village Triangle (JVT) by enhancing exits and reducing traffic congestion. Stretching over 4.5 kilometres, the project aims to boost capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour, promising smoother journeys for all.

Pedestrian Footbridges - A safer way to move

Dubai is also investing in pedestrian safety and convenience.

The RTA has constructed seven footbridges complete with dedicated bike tracks and racks. These footbridges, with a total length of 888 metres, enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety across the city. From Al Khaleej Street to Ras Al Khor Road, these footbridges provide safe passage for those who prefer walking and cycling as their mode of transportation.

Umm Suqeim Street expansion

Umm Suqeim Street is in line for a substantial expansion, extending from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, covering a distance of 4.6 kilometres.

This ambitious project will increase the road's capacity to a remarkable 16,000 vehicles per hour, reducing congestion and travel times. With improved entrances, exits, and upper bridges, the road will become a vital artery for smoother citywide transportation.
